Wax and Wane
Carved Pine Slab 2020- This carving is a reflection of a moment when a loved one grappled with a bipolar episode, and I found myself both present and profoundly affected by their journey.
The figure on the right represents the fury and violence of his mania contrasted with the figure on the right, which depicts when he was able to breathe deeply and find calmness. I used chisels for cutting out large portions of wood, and the foredom for detail work.
May this artwork serve as a reminder that amidst the turmoil, there is always the potential for moments of respite. It is my hope that this carving provides insight into the complexities of mental health, fostering compassion and promoting open conversations about the realities of these experiences.
